Vision insurance vs. medical health insurance

It is important to be aware that vision insurance is not the same as medical health insurance. When you have vision insurance coverage, it resembles a discount plan. Routine wellness eye examinations and visual acuity testing is generally covered. This includes the diagnosis of typical vision conditions, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), the inability to read at a close distance (presbyopia) and astigmatism. Vision insurance also generally provides benefits to defray the costs of eyeglasses and contact lenses. However, medical eye health assessments are not included in the insurance plans. In contrast, medical health insurance usually covers the expenses of our comprehensive medical eye exams.

Some conditions that we may diagnose in a medical eye exam:

  • Diabetes and vision go hand in hand. If you have diabetes, you need to know that having this systemic disease puts you at greater risk for developing vision problems.
  • This uncomfortable condition is due to a constant deficiency in the quality or quantity of lubrication on the surface of your eyes. Symptoms include sore eyes, itchiness or a gritty feeling in your eyes. Dry Eye Syndrome also raises the risk of eye infections and corneal inflammation, and wearing contact lenses may feel impossible. Dr. Somji will assess your condition in our Sugar Land, TX, clinic, and we will offer solutions to help relieve your irritation.
  • Soreness and pink or red eyes may be a sign of infection. These symptoms may also be caused by contact with a foreign substance – even soap in your eyes can cause damage to delicate tissues. In our medical exam, we will assess your eyes carefully to determine the best treatment. We are qualified to treat many eye emergencies, infection and eye damage, in addition to removing foreign objects. In the event of an emergency, call Dr. Somji in our Sugar Land office for guidance.
  • Using a high powered lens and the latest diagnostic optometric technology, we will inspect your retina and eye tissues during our medical examination. For greater accuracy, eye drops may be applied to dilate your pupils. Tonometry will also be used to check the inner pressure of your eyes. Common eye diseases include cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma.
